Alcohol and minors. In France, for example, children are given a glass of wine with meals at a very young age. I doubt that the preponderance of alcoholism in their society is any greater than our own. One beneficial consequence is that they have a lower rate of heart disease than the US, in spite of indulging in a high saturated fat diet.

A couple of points.

First, in most Latin countries, Wine is thought of very differently from hard alcohol, (i.e. whiskey, gin, etc).

It is part of a daily diet. There is no "stigma" that drinking wine at an early age will lead to "alcoholism". Of course, all in moderation.

Personally, I would rather drink wine or even beer, before drinking the so call "sodas".... particularly Coke or Pepsi... that is real poison !! For one, they will rot your teeth. But to each his/her own.

Contrary to a lot of Frenchmen, I would drink [well] water. They say, water is for animals... <g>

Second....

Republicans pay lip service to free enterprise but their heart is in their repressive social agenda. Democrats pay lip service to civil liberties but their heart is in socialistic, welfare state programs.

Indeed... I would only add that the extreme right arm of the Republicans is the equivalent of the Muslim Hamas, or the Medieval Inquisition in pushing their religious agenda...

I would even venture to say that the Democrats have grown a little more to the center, somehow accepting the fact that Socialism does not work, yet the Republicans have grown even more extremists. The good thing has been that it has allowed all the radical church cockroaches and similar fascist rats to come out of the racist sewer, where they belong.

Unfortunately for Libertarians, the belief that the individual should be responsible for many of the decisions that the others think government should make for us, plays against the very game that politicians play during the election process. Therefore, when it comes to "seeking to be elected for office", it is an impossibility that a Libertarian would ever win.... by the nature of the philosophy.

Particularly when you have a growing population that yearns to be "protected", "told what to do", and the like.

People at heart, do not wish to be free, they would rather be "safe".

Freedom does work, but it requires respect for individual rights, the use of reason and, courage to execute our freedom of choice and the responsibility that comes along with said freedom.

Dwindling commodities, at best.

Amusing, but not exactly responsive...
