Digital ISP Launched In Ahmedabad By A. Nair(InternetNews India Correspondent ) [June 16, 1999--MUMBAI] India's first private digital Internet service with multi-flavored, multi-faceted range of services was finally launched in Ahmedabad by the Gujarat chief minister Keshubhai Patel. The new service, called IceNet, is a joint venture between the Ahmedabad-based Elecmech group and Eclipse, a US-based IT company with more than a decade's worth of experience as an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in New York and the Caribbean Islands. Market observers state that IceNet has broken new grounds in Internet technology in India besides offering certain services which can be called the firsts in the world. Redefining the meaning of Internet access and usage, IceNet replaces the conventional analog technology by digital lines thus making the transmission swifter and fault-free. IceNet was the result of year-long in-depth study into the Internet needs of the people of Gujarat and the understanding of the value-added services that would make all the difference to the netizens. Observers point out that IceNet offers tremendous user advantages by eliminating all the snags attached to the analog-based Internet service. IceNet was connected to the Navrangapura telephone exchange through dedicated fiber optic cables while all the other ISPs use conventional copper cables. The fiber cables enable noise-free and uninterrupted Internet usage. People subscribing to IceNet Internet service will have to suffer only two analog-digital conversions, whereas other ISPs put an Internet user to four conversions. Moreover, the international gateway link for IceNet is right in Gandhinagar with the Software Technology Park of India (STPI), offering satellite links to US-based UUNet. Making transmission even more faster is the presence of servers in Ahmedabad. IceNet uses hi-tech digital modems--V90 Compliant 56 kpbs modems-- from US robotics, which according to a survey done by the company, shows that it can enhance effective Internet usage time by about 70 per cent. Besides the futuristic Internet services that IceNet was bringing for the netizens of Gujarat, there are an assortment of interesting features that come free. The personalised E-card with a pre-scheduled facility, the 'On-line Cyber Pundit' to take care of one's horoscope, and further matching it with the prospective life-partner--along with detailed break-up of 'Gunanks' and Mangal, etc. In regard to price, IceNet is on par with the rates prevailing in the market.
