Seagate Debuts SeaStream(TM) Technology; Company Leverages A/V Expertise To Deliver Consumer Television Recording Drives
SeaStream(TM) Open Interface Specification Optimizes Drives for Streaming Audio/Video in Consumer Devices With On-The-Fly Support for Conventional Data Storage
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Seagate Technology, Inc. (NYSE: SEG - news) today raised the bar in home television recording technology with the debut of SeaStream(TM) technology. SeaStream technology enables disc drives to deliver a compatible data transfer rate required for audio/video programming on television sets, stereo systems, and other home entertainment devices, without sacrificing any of the data integrity that is expected from consumer devices that also record Internet content or other computer data.

With SeaStream, a family could potentially record two television programs, watch a movie, listen to a favorite musical, play a car racing game and browse the web simultaneously, all from the same home entertainment storage device. This is because users of SeaStream-enabled recording devices have the potential ability to record and/or play back several different channels, such as television shows, music, and game console programs, simultaneously. Viewers could also immediately jump to any point within a program or between programs without the usual search time delay of tape- and cassette-based systems.

SeaStream technology is superior to other technologies in several respects:

Seagate is introducing an open interface specification for SeaStream. Seagate plans to propose a set of A/V extensions for disc drives to the AT Standards Committee later this month.
SeaStream enables drives to simultaneously support both data and A/V operations, meeting the data integrity requirements for computer data and the time-critical performance requirements for A/V content. SeaStream adjusts on-the-fly for both kinds of information streams. This allows SeaStream-enabled recording devices to provide both A/V and Internet-based content from the same disc drive, a feature that is likely to be required on many future consumer devices.
SeaStream also addresses other issues that are critical to the growing adoption of disc drives in consumer electronics. Rather than singularly focusing on sustained data transfer rate requirements, SeaStream enables hard drive-based home electronics to tackle such key matters as lowered acoustics and power consumption.
''Seagate's legacy of innovation has established the Company as one of the top brands in professional A/V recording technology, and SeaStream continues that heritage,'' said Michael Sklar, Senior Director of Strategic Marketing at Seagate. ''Seagate's proposal of an open interface architecture, dual support of both data and A/V streams, and attention to matters beyond that of sustained data transfer rates positions SeaStream technology ahead of any other initiatives in this area. Combined with Seagate's top-tier partnerships and proven track record of delivering the best in information storage products, SeaStream should have a dramatic impact on the future of hard drive-based home recording.''

''Seagate professional recording products have become critical storage devices to the Filmmakers' Alliance, providing fast and reliable video recording and playback capabilities for many of Hollywood's content producers,'' said Elyse Couvillion, director of digital content at Filmmakers' Alliance. ''What's exciting is how Seagate's ability to leverage that leading expertise from content producer to content consumer will revolutionize the consumer electronics marketplace.''

Drives embedding SeaStream technology will be available to development partners this summer, and the technology is scheduled for integration into Seagate's next-generation consumer disc drives.

mike...finally a voice of reason...thank you

the competitive factor as in "if somebody wins, then another must lose" would be a fatal mistake in the forward advancement of what dell has achieved. this has been my point to many on the thread, who lack real world understanding of business achievement required to blend and balance competition/supplier to a point where they are the same entity. our government discourages prosperity both in businesses and individuals. like businesses must work together in the form of cartels to further efficiencies and guarantee health of the world economies. negative competition benefits the buyer/consumer, but only in a price basis...it tends to harm the after sale ability to support one's product. in spite of my constant chiding of "mikey", it is directed to the thread to realize that "winners" and "losers" are bad for the economy..."mikey" knows that...but do his shareholders.

ceo's are forced in todays time to play games, justify their existence in three month intervals, unfortunately it is a game that must be played in order to maintain a healthy stock price. gates and grove have learned this, gerstner and armstrong excel, "mikey" has to play at and learn to "win" the "perception" game...for in this game the winners and losers are the stockholders.

i abhor the professional opinionators, but they exist, as does the twenty four hour news media that spins a harmless daily event into a froth. ten years ago, how many stayed glued to their tv in anticipation of a cpi report???? it is lunacy, but it is mild compared to what will be presented by the media in the future...grief and greed sells, it keeps people off balance, prosperity can be handled, easy to be happy, must look for something not to be happy...

all this to say, i appreciate the wisdom of one as you, who understands the intricacies of business....not like swatting flies, more like tuning a fine instrument!
