Winbond and Zapex Ship New Low Cost MPEG Video Encoder; W99200F Enables a New
Generation of Consumer Video Products

Business Editors/High Tech Writers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 1999--Zapex
Research LTD and Winbond Electronics announced immediate availability
of W99200F, the world's most advanced MPEG encoder.
The highly integrated, single chip encoder provides exceptional
video quality while minimizing system cost and storage requirements.
This balance makes the W99200F perfectly suited to low cost consumer
products.
John Zornes, Director of Marketing for Zapex Research LTD, points
out, "By combining Zapex's superiority in video and ASIC design with
Winbond's production and distribution channels we can deliver a very
high quality, low cost solution. Our customers get the best of both
worlds."
The W99200F is capable of recording an hour of high quality video
& audio on a single CD making it perfect for applications such as
digital VCR, recordable video CD, PC video capture & editing, and web
cameras. In addition, Zapex has included several features that make
the W99200F particularly suited for security and video monitoring
applications.
The highly advanced design supports features such as
pre-filtering, automatic scene change detection, 3:2 pull-down,
adaptive-field-averaging, variable bitrate encoding, and automatic
time stamping. Leveraging the W99200F's integrated bus interfaces,
FIFO, and audio interface minimizes the need for additional circuitry
reducing the total system cost.
"We are focused on delivering complete solutions that get our
customers to market quickly," said John Zornes. This philosophy is
clearly visible in the chip's aggressive pricing of $15 in low volume
and the completeness of the evaluation kit. Priced at $1,500 and
available for immediate delivery, the W99PCI-200F evaluation kit comes
with everything required to rapidly bring a product to market. The kit
includes evaluation board, device drivers, reference design, 30 sample
chips, and full documentation.
"Consumer video applications are just starting to explode," said
Jack Chang, Director of Multimedia Product Business Division for
Winbond Electronics. "Supporting data rates from 64K to 9M bits per
second the W99200F is well positioned to dominate desktop and
bandwidth constrained video applications."
"Winbond is an industry leader in the development, production and
delivery of MPEG decoder chips that address China's VCD market," noted
Jack Chang. "The W99200F leverages Winbond's experience and product
portfolio in the digital video market."
