In another case, John Miller, an experimental test mechanic, said he called Unique Financial Concepts Inc. in Boca Raton, Fla., after seeing its ad on cable TV. Mr. Miller testified in a pending case in U.S. District Court in Miami that about an hour after he agreed to invest $5,000, a Federal Express truck pulled up to his doorstep to pick up the check. Dazzled by promises of 50% to 80% returns, he ultimately invested $15,000.
"I was apprehensive because I didn't know anything about" currency trading, Mr. Miller says in an interview. But he says the lure of big gains and a salesman's promise that "I couldn't lose" clouded his vision.
