Only a fool would pay $300 more for a moderate improvement over 550 MHz K6-III ;)

Intel has already identified and trained a large group of buyers who fall in this category. AMD just needs some dancing Athlon bunnies. I suspect that they would be able to find a lot of volunteer bunnies up in San Francisco.

Yield is just one factor in the profit equation. Intel has demonstrated that if you own the megahertz high ground then you can control your ASP.

Remember, AMD can only possibly cover a small percentage of the total processor market, so it seems a fine objective to make that percentage all chips that run faster than Intel's fastest.

With limited supply the demand will be there for top-of-the-range chips. Just look at how the K6 prices are going up as AMD cuts over capacity to producing K7.
