General Instrument & ACTV To Offer a Complete Solution for Addressable, Targeted Digital Television Advertising Business Wire - June 14, 1999 04:15 HORSHAM, Pa. & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--
New GI/ACTV Solution Will Provide Advertisers with
Highly Targeted Commercial Advertising & Offer MSOs
Additional Advertising Revenues From Ad Avails
General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC) and ACTV, Inc. (NASDAQ: IATV), today announced that the two companies will work together to develop and introduce a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for delivering addressable, targeted advertising via digital cable, satellite, and broadcast television. GI will combine its digital interactive system and consumer set tops with ACTV's proprietary "Individualized Advertising" software and programming capabilities to deliver this complete solution, which will improve the effectiveness and accountability of television advertising.
Demonstrations of the new system will be held at ACTV's Booth No. 2154 at the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) annual convention, June 13-16, in Chicago, IL.
By capitalizing on the intellectual property held by both organizations, the new GI/ACTV solution will enable advertisers to target commercial advertising to specific households and individuals to achieve greater reach accountability. In addition to highly targeted delivery of advertising commercials, this solution will also offer e-commerce and interactive television advertising opportunities, such as couponing, at an efficient advertising cost per thousand (CPM). GI and ACTV are in conversations with top consumer product advertisers, advertising agencies, and media buyers, including American Home Products, BBDO, McCann Erickson, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Young & Rubicam/The Media Edge to finalize specifications and features.
David Reese, president and chief operating officer of ACTV, Inc., said, "The advent of digital television and broadband has provided more quantity and variation of choice for viewers, and has presented a great opportunity for the advertising community. In a world with hundreds of channels, the viability and control of effective television advertising is now possible. We are excited to partner with General Instrument to deliver this service on their interactive digital platform. There is no question they are the world's leader in interactive digital broadband network solutions."
"Advertisers and marketers have long been asking for more targeted audience delivery systems to increase television advertising's efficiency and impact; and viewers want more control over what they watch. The power of GI's interactive digital platform can help make this a reality," said Richard Smith, executive vice president, new business development at General Instrument. "We're excited about working with ACTV to develop this unique advertising opportunity."
This solution will also provide multiple system operators (MSOs), broadcasters and other system operators with the ability to implement digital advertising insertion on a local and regional headend basis, thereby providing incremental revenue from the same inventory of ad avails, and supplemental revenue from each interactive digital commercial. Consumers will enjoy more control over their television viewing experience, with commercials now more relevant to each viewer's individual preferences.
The new venture between GI and ACTV will be based on an array of system technologies designed to target advertising to individual households and persons with digital accuracy. Although these systems are designed to work in a multiple platform environment, initial deployment will be on GI's digital cable platform. Through a previously existing agreement, ACTV's software is already integrated for deployment on GI's digital interactive platform. This provides a base of over 3.5 million digital interactive set tops already shipped that can leverage this new targeted advertising offering.
