*****off topic: Motorola Rant**********

Judy, re: "What's your deeper thinking, my dear?" Nothing like a frantic scream for profound analytical cogitation to get Surfer Mike's motor running, so buckle your seat belt and let's get under the covers (metaphorically speaking, of course):
BatWing deserves a place in the portfolio of every worst enemy you have--presuming you are not in to self abuse, this would exclude thee from share ownership. Lots of companies don't want folks smoking. Fair enough. But they don't mind when guys and gals sneak outside for a few quick puffs. Not the facists from Illinois who patrol the parking lot and bust guys FOR SMOKING IN THEIR OWN CARS! These are Marlboros BTW, not the funny ciggies which MOT would probably consider a hanging offense. Great idea huh? Fire Fred for beating a butt at lunch hour. Enlightened Management discontinued this far sighted procedure after a) losing a few million wrongful termination suits, and b) the Forbes article which disclosed the practice.
Can't make an ASIC to save your ass? Losing gazillions as the paging business descends to commodity pricing and below? Slow to figure out that TDMA was getting schnookered by those nutty guys from the beaches of SoCal? Sue the bastards for copying the completely generic clam shell design, but not before instructing your employees to swipe a few of the competition's models. Judges tend not to swear in court a whole lot, but when they do they use code phrases that run along the lines of: "unclean hands", which is what the man in the black robe layed on Rotomola as he tossed them and their suit out of his courtroom. Very poor form, that.
Now let's jump to outer space which is about the only spot in the Universe to flush $6 Billion or so on a satellite system so elegant that these clowns figured guys wouldn't mind dropping $5/minute to use the damn thing. The reasoning was that there was a significant market for weight lifters (mandatory to lift the handset) with infinite disposable income. First one sold to Jesse "The Body" Ventura in a jif, but follow-on momentum has been difficult to achieve.
Taking on Intel to develop speciality microprocessors looked to be another sure fire winner, but even that was a heck of lot smarter than backing Apple against the whole PC/WINTEL combine.
Let me stop here, and ask why, with 64,897,562 possible securities to choose from, BatWing would even cross your mind? My wife's investment club [which for some reason pointedly excludes me from their monthly deliberations] owns the damn thing and I intend to short enough shares to offset my community property prorata share to protect the family jewels. And besides that, I don't like 'em.
Yours in bile and vitriol, Surfer Mike
