El: I have been making enquiries about earnings. I hear third-hand that high-end sales and services are going well, that the COMPAQ factories are churning out consumer PC's like hot cakes and that the only visible softness is in commercial PC's. The ordinary folk in Houston are puzzled by Kumar's channels stuffing comments - as well as his comments about low-end products. Would the plants be still going flat out if there was excess inventory in the channel or if there was no demand for COMPAQ consumer PC's?

This is all very impressionistic and we have been fooled before by what appeared be strong demand on the manufacturing plants, but at least it is interesting to note that there is no obvious lack of business.

The re-occuring weakness in corporate PC sales may be one of the issues which tomorrow's announcement addresses. I have a feeling that COMPAQ will be cut and shaped to do well what it does well and to put on the back-burner some of the things which drain its resources and energy and blunt its focus - for little profit.
