Yogi,

<<The winchester hard drive is an obstacle (the best technology available right now) not an enabling technology like the semiconductor.>>

I disagree. In fact I see the hard drive, and magnetic storage as a primary enabler of computing. And to call the technology an obstacle versus an enabler is just not acknowledging what has been an absolutely astounding history of technical excellence in my opinion not to mention the position the technology holds in computing in general. I also see the technology reaching a point in development where it will be a primary enabler in home appliances along the lines of what we have been talking about here. Are there other forms of storage? Sure. Do they have a place in the suite of technologies that are changing our lives? Sure. But hard disk technology deserves at least equal billing IMO and users have benefitted hugely from the industry in terms of real value and performance. But I am unabashedly prejudiced.

Best,
Stitch

Re: How many moving parts in a semiconductor? How many moving parts in a winchester hard drive? Operating at what tolerance?

Actually, clocks and watches (pre-quartz) used to be precision mechanical assemblies too (probably as hard to make in their day as hard disks now), and people had many per household -- not just one central time server clock.

I would have thought the disk drive has enabled computing as we know it today, right from the desktop on up to the mainframe. -Z

Yogi, re >The winchester hard drive is an obstacle (the best technology available right now)<

I haven't seen any complaints that drives have insufficient
capacity or speed. So how can it be an obstacle?
