I've always like ADBE products. I never upgraded to Xpress 4, it seemed too risky. InDesign does look very good…

Quark 4 saves time from jumping from Illustrator just to curve type, etc. Your crashes may be more related to your Mac OS than than Xpress. Emptying your trash after each crash will help as the Xpress temp file there will initiate another crash. Adobe is great but Xpress is way too entrenched in the creative architecture to ever be unseated, regardless of the quality of Adobe's product. It would be like attempting to get all publishing Mac users to switch to PC because it crashes less. Pretty unlikely. Why Adobe waited this long to offer a comparable product is a mystery.
