IT WAS double-coupon week at the supermarket, and I was ready. Carefully I selected every item for which I had a coupon. At the checkout counter, the cashier rang up my purchases and then began deducting the double-coupon amounts. I watched as my tab got smaller and smaller, and the line behind me grew. When a total was reached, I heard groans and cheers.
