***OT*** "DoCoMo Sides With Palm In PDA Race"

(thanks to Meng on the COMS thread)

By a staff reporter

15 June 1999

NTT DoCoMo, Japan's leading mobile company, has signed a deal
with 3Com Corp. to work towards making DoCoMo services
operate with 3Com's Palm series of handheld devices.

The Japanese operator, a subsidiary of domestic telecoms giant
NTT, will share technical information with 3Com. DoCoMo will
give 3Com the specs of its wireless data technology, while 3Com will
supply its Japanese partner with the details of both the Palm
platform and the wireless applications 3Com is developing for it.

While nothing is carved in stone -- the agreement speaks only of
"promoting... tie-ups aimed at developing new products and
services" -- the target is the development of providing a joint wireless
data service and data solutions business. The two companies also
plan to work together to promote mobile multimedia services.

3Com is just beginning to push its army of customers -- the Palm
series is one of the most popular handhelds worldwide -- into
wireless data.

Till now, Palm users who wanted wireless connectivity had to clip a
modem onto the base of the device and then connect it to a mobile
phone.

Now, though, 3Com is trialling a new model with built-in cellular
communications, the Palm VII, in New York over the next few
months alongside its own wireless-only Internet service provider,
Palm.Net.

The trials could provide a model for similar ventures -- such as one
with DoCoMo -- elsewhere.
