It is actually called female circumcision, but of course it is far more damaging to the female genitals then those words might imply. And yes, I knew about it, and about the selling of children (especially girls)- of course this happens everywhere. In Thailand and other parts of Asia young girls are sold as prostitutes- because some ignorant men there believe that having sex with very young girls cuts there risk of contracting aids. It is not a good life to be a poor child in the developing world.

Alice Walker wrote a novel about this and brought it to America's attention several years ago - Possessing the Secret of Joy. It's a horrifying tradition; young girls sometimes bled to death after the "procedure", suffered a great deal of pain, and of course, could never have a normal sex life.
