Minor quibble. Those didn't actually worship the drugs. They revered them as earthly gates to the spirit world. Just as a Baptist doesn't worship the cross - it is the instrument of salvation but not the actual deity.

Perhaps it means that we all know there is something worth worshipping, and it's just whether we find the true person/thing worthy of worship or settle for a substitute.
