Good point, JRH. Both EMC and NTAP provide storage systems that meet UNIX and NT file protocol standards. A customer is not "locked in" by proprietary gates. IMO, if either system did not meet standards, they wouldn't exist.

OTOH, moving a TB of data from one storage system to another is not trivial.

What is proprietary are the methods used by both to provide the speed, size, security, data protection and price points. These features are exactly where they compete against one another.
