Motorola Leads Cable modem Market, ADSL Market Heats Up
In Q1 1999 According to New Cahners In-Stat Group Report
NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 16, 1999--According to a recent report released by Cahners In-Stat Group, both the cable modem and ADSL modem markets continued steady growth in Q1 99.

Motorola and Nortel Networks continued to lead the cable modem market. Combined, the two companies held 65 percent of total cable modems shipped.

According to Cahners In-Stat Group, standards-based modems are beginning to see a greater presence in this market, however in Q1 99, DOCSIS-based cable modems represented only 10 percent of total cable modems shipped. 3Com, General Instruments and Samsung led in DOCSIS-based modem shipments.

Due to considerable progress made towards multi-vendor interoperability, the ADSL market is clearly poised to take-off. Alcatel and Cisco led the ADSL modem market in Q1 99. Combined, the two vendors captured almost 60 percent of units shipped. Standards based ASDL-lite modems are expected to begin rolling out in Q3 and Q4 and should be a significant boon for the penetration of ADSL-lite services in 2000.

''The digital modem market is heating up as standards based products come to market and large scale deployments begin in earnest,'' said Shannon Pleasant, Senior Analyst for the Data and Voice Communications Group. ''We expect the next three quarters to be critical in determining the success of the market as service providers and equipment vendors deliver on their promise of megabit access for the masses.''

Cahners In-Stat Group also reports: -- ADSL CPE shipments increased by 30 percent sequentially, while

cable modem shipments increased by 20 percent sequentially in Q1

99. -- In contrast, the Analog Modem market experienced its worst

quarter ever in Q1 99 due to increased bundling, lag after the

holiday season and pressure from higher speed technologies.

The report, Q1 99 Analog and Digital Modem Market Analysis, no.CQ9902M7, provides quarterly market shares for analog, cable and ADSL modem vendors and three quarterly rolling forecasts for those markets. To purchase the reports, call 617/630-2144.

Was anyone listening to CNBC this morning? In the pre-market comments the CNBC guy at the NASDAQ said one of the things to watch this morning was AWRE, because the analyst at CSFB had raised his revenue estimate for Q2 to $11 million. Doesn't make any sense, but did anyone else hear this?
