Here is a reference to the China buildout announcement. The goal of 28 million subscribers in 2003 shows how big the China market is. Also
of note is the low telephone penetrance mentioned in the article. If the facts as stated in Mike Piturro's post #32449 are typical, then GSM will be "toast" (tm-Caxton R)in China. (Jon K --please figure out what to do with all the excess toast.)

great--China United Telecommunications Corp (China Unicom), a state-run telecommunications operator in China, on Tuesday
unveiled an ambitious plan to boost its CDMA mobile phone network capacity in China to handle 40 million users by the end of
2003.

By the end of 2003, China Unicom estimates it will serve 28 million CDMA subscribers, about 70 percent of the network's 40
