No joking anymore, I would like to know (with respect to the child soldier question), what the minimum age for a soldier in the US might be?

In my country it looks like this:

public smoke/drink (16) < driving licence, recruit, vote (18) < right to be candidate in national ballot (21), eligible for gun licence (under additional precautions)

I have the feeling the order is reverse in the US.

I think the passage in the article is not a good explanation if the minimum recruiting age in the US is e.g. 17.5 years, some amendment would have done. And the low number of youngster soldiers stated in the publication seems to point to such situation.
