Nuance Speech Technology Powers General Magic's New myTalk
Updated 12:05 PM ET June 17, 1999MENLO PARK, Calif., June 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Nuance Communications, the leading provider of speech recognition and speaker verification software for V-Commerce(TM) and telecommunications transactions, announced today that its speech technology is being used in the new myTalk(TM) e-mail service from General Magic. This free Internet service lets people use their own spoken words, any telephone and a toll-free number to interact with their e-mail.

Nuance's speech software is also used in General Magic's Portico(TM) virtual assistant service, which provides mobile professionals with a broad range of voice accessible services including voicemail and e-mail. The software works with General Magic's magicTalk(TM) voice user interface platform to allow myTalk and Portico users to easily work with information using just their voices.

Nuance, acknowledged as the leader in enterprise speech recognition by several market research and analyst firms including Aberdeen Group, Gartner Group and Rabobank International, has deployed systems for a large number of customers on four continents. Nuance servers currently handle more than 1.5 million transactions per day around the world.

"We are pleased to extend our successful relationship with General Magic to include myTalk, the first free Internet service to feature an advanced speech capability," said Ronald Croen, president and CEO of Nuance Communications. "The service is a great example of how speech makes it very convenient for consumers to work with Web content."

"The success of our voice applications depends in large part on how well they recognize what our users say," said Roy Albert, vice president of engineering for General Magic, Inc. "We have been very pleased to date with the performance of Nuance's speech recognition engine, which will play a key role in making myTalk a very easy and helpful tool for consumers."

How myTalk Works

Nuance's award-winning natural language understanding technology allows myTalk members to simply speak to the myTaIk service to access and manage e-mail messages. The service responds to the user in a pleasant, conversational manner. Nuance's barge-in capabilities allow a member to speak at any time to request the service to take action. For example, a member can say "Read it," "Get rid of it," "Next," or "I'd like to reply" to handle common tasks, even when listening to a message.

To become a myTalk member, visit the mytalk.com Web site. The service is free to U.S. residents due to advertising sponsorship.
