wily, I have a 6.0 Gig IBM and now the 10.0 G Maxtor. The Maxtor is not quite as quiet as the IBM, but a hell of a lot quieter than the Western Digital 3.0 Gig I also have.

I'm pretty happy with it, but I love the IBM's too.

Wily

I'm really curious how quiet they are.

My Deskstar is mounted in an internal bay and I honestly can hear it at all. Of course I have 10 case fans running <g>, but even when I had 4 case fans I counldn't hear the IBM.

I took your advice and am bidding on MS-DOS 6.22 sealed with manual/certificate of authenticity at E-bay. The high bid is at $20 right now (not me). Do you recall what DOS was going for when it was being sold retail?

Clarence

Very. I have Maxtor 5, 7, 8, 17, and 20 GB drives (see earlier
post), and they are all inaudible. Six of these are spinning
within 3 feet of me right now, and all I can hear is the (low db)
case fan on one side and the (too noisy) PC Power & Cooling dual
cpu fan on the other side. Even with the case open
you have to really listen. I was worried about the 7200 rpm
20GB, but nope. Not a whisper. In fact, I have to really
listen during boot up to be sure the drives are calibrating.
