based on number of trades, the top three online brokers are:

1) schwab with $219B in assets
2) etrade with $21.1B
3) waterhouse with $38.8B

these are the latest figures i have through the first quarter. it may be significant to note that etrade did surpass waterhouse during the quarter, but obviously still lags in assets.

schwab's assets represent about 40% of all assets held in online brokerage accounts. they registered 138,000 trades per day versus 65,800 for etrade. unfortunately, i don't have the exact daily figure for waterhouse, but i doubt it's much less. next behind waterhouse are datek, fidelity investments, and ameritrade.
