My father did the same thing--- but I think it was because he thought it was terribly funny. Chocolate covered ants and bees, snails, frog legs jumping around in the pan, raw oysters. Mostly he did this on Christmas Eve when their best friends came over and the men would get inebriated before Midnight Mass. I'm surprised our little church didn't combust when the candles were lit from the fumes of all that imbibing. My father used to sit humming loudly and happily along with the choir while my mother tried to pretend he wasn't related to us.
My brother and I thought he was a lot of fun.
