In a way this is a marriage between opposites. But if you ask the question "What was missing" from the vision of Sotheby's becoming a seller of collectibles and fine goods to a much broader market and, likewise, what was missing from scrappy young Amazon's hopes of becoming a long lasting ecommerce icon, the marriage makes every bit of sense for both parties. Good chemistry can come out of this, IMO.

For Amazon, this deal could mean a lot in terms of legitimizing the partnering with other established companies. During the next few years we will start to see established companies really enter into ecommerce in a meaningful way. And don't believe for a minute that many of these efforts won't be worthwhile. Amazon or other young companies don't have a monopoly on talent or business savvy and customers will go with quality and value. The Sotheby's deal can mean a lot to AMZN because it should enhance the chances of doing more deals in the future.
