I noticed mr. goldfinger on SI is now an IT expert. Someone might want to post the following article from CBS Marketwatch:
cbs.marketwatch.com
vs. UNIXSoftware and hardware spending isn't seen growing as strongly. Those companies are expected to spend 2.3 percent of their IT budgets on software and 4 percent on hardware. Services, meanwhile, are expected to absorb 21 percent compounded from 1996 to 2002.On the software server side, Novell (NOVL: news, msgs) looks likely to lose significant market share, according to the respondents. Microsoft's (MSFT: news, msgs) Windows NT has emerged as the new platform of choice for Wall Street firms, growing some 130 percent in the last two years, Tabb said.

ASTN may be vulnerable to market volume like ITG

biz.yahoo.com

anyone staying long this stock may want to learn
from ASTN's competitor ITG, that these companies
will only grow significantly as long as volume
and volatility in the markets exist. When volume
abates, even for a quarter, stocks like ITG can
get hurt, ASTN will be no different in this respect.

"I'm sure NASDAQ and NYSE are happy with their UNIX platforms -- but I
wonder exactly how and with what software they are designing their future
electronic modules. I don't suppose you know what their future systems
design architecture and requirements are (with precision)?? I didn't think so.

Auric is not an expert in O/S. But I have been in the business for 10 years and I can assure you that any company that deals with 100k transactions a day or more will never use MSFT products as back bone as a matter of fact not alot of them use UNIX it is all still done on the mainframe side and this fact will not change in the forseeable future.
