Roger: I wonder why?????????????? Read below looking for news relevant to Sungold Gaming; as reported on BCTV news 6/15/99, and snipped from the TVFORBC.COM webpage. It doesn't bode well for any proposals in B.C. that relate to gaming. Tuesday, June 15, 1999 SPINNING THE WHEEL (BCTV) - Remember those high-end, Monaco-style, casinos that the B.C. government has been talking about? Well, never mind. The minister who first proposed them has changed his position. And all the big money is betting that the government is about to reverse its entire gaming policy. Keith Baldrey has the story: Dan Miller, Deputy Premier: "Well, I think we should get out of this gaming expansion." Keith Baldrey, reporting: "It was a bolt from the blue - a political bombshell of the first magnitude. With Premier Glen Clark conveniently out of the capital, the deputy premier announces a sudden reversal of a controversial NDP policy." Dan Miller, Deputy Premier: "We looked at a different model which is a fairly modest expansion and that has proven to be a huge political problem for this government. And in hindsight perhaps, my view now is get out, get out now... " Keith Baldrey, reporting: "To say gambling has been controversial for the NDP is an understatement. The rapid expansion of gaming to include destination resort casinos and the installation of slot machines in charity casinos has pitted the NDP against municipalities, and put the government on the wrong side of public opinion." Dan Miller, Deputy Premier: "The strongest argument against gaming is the moral one. And I recall discussing this issue with religious leaders when I was the minister." Keith Baldrey, reporting: "Miller's sudden announcement drew immediate support from a key NDP minister." Ujjal Dosanjh, Attorney General: "The deputy premier is right. I think it is an issue that has impacted on the party both within and outside of caucus and I think it is important to reconsider...I support the reconsideration." Keith Baldrey, reporting: "And even one of the NDP's most vocal critics offered some cautious praise." Connie Fogal, anti-gaming activist: "That would be a wonderful, progressive, correct, political position." Keith Baldrey, reporting: "The Opposition, however, saw the policy reversal as further evidence of a government in disarray." Gordon Campbell, Opposition Leader: "That is really an incredible admission of failure. This is a government that has ignored the people of British Columbia for the last three years. They've been trying to impose gambling on the people of B.C....They wasted 400-thousand tax dollars trying to force this down the communities of Vancouver and Surrey's throats. It's an absolutely incredible turn of events." Keith Baldrey, reporting: "The minister responsible for gaming seemed caught off guard." Mike Farnworth, Minister Responsible for Gaming: "I am not unhappy with their comments. I think they are voicing their opinions and I think that is what the white paper is all about...It was intended to generate discussion and to provide a framework from which the government can make decisions..."
