You (or your company) are already paying plenty for health care. Only it goes to an insurance company first, which takes its cut (huge!) before passing it along to health care providers. Why not pay the same amount (in taxes), cut out the for-profit middleman, and distribute the larger net?

We are the only industrial country who fails to do this...

True story: three years ago my father, a diabetic, was visiting me in England. He had an insulin attack and had to be rushed to hospital via ambulance. He was immediately seen by a physician, and kept overnight in the hospital for observation. As he was leaving the next day, he pulled out his money and asked for the bill. "Bill?", the young administrator chuckled. "There's no bill. You are now a subject of her majesty the Queen!"

Would that happen to a European visiting here?
