I think this has confused some people who follow the tech industry but have never heard of the name Coppermine. Despite the name, Intel isn't using copper interconnect until a few years from now.

I think that the name was chosen for maximum possible confusion. Maybe they thought they could throw AMD off the track.

I believe this code name was selected well before IBM's copper process announcement. Take this for what it's worth.
