Steve,

I admit you have a point (or two). It is true that the quality of public health care in Britain is not up to standard. France and Italy too have problems. But my observation of health care systems in Germany, Sweden, Austria and Switzerland is that, yes taxes are high, but everyone is covered very well, hospitals are clean and efficient, and no one suffers anxiety from not receiving coverage.

When my wife and I moved here from the UK 3 years ago, she was pregnant with our first child. We were told by my employer's insurance that she had a "pre-existing condition" and would therefore not be covered. We had to pay for the entire delivery out of pocket!

There is something wrong with a government that won't ensure the healthy delivery of all of its future tax-payers!

I also sit on the Ethics Committee of our local hospital. And I can relate a long list of horror stories regarding medical insurance companies refusing to pay for needed services...or of HMO's needlessly exposing patients to risk simply because one of their doctors was not available at the hospital. You were fortunate in your coverage. But not all are.

TC.
