North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry Posts May 1999 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 1.24

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., June 17, 1999 -- North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted a four percent month-over-month increase in bookings worldwide in May 1999 to $1.43 billion, it was reported by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI).

The North American semiconductor equipment industry posted a book-to-bill ratio of 1.24 for May 1999. A book-to-bill of 1.24 means $124 in orders were received for each $100 worth of products shipped.

Three-month average shipments in May 1999 were $1.15 billion. The figure is seven percent above the April 1999 level, and is 16 percent below the May 1998 level of $1.36 billion. Three-month average bookings increased in May 1999 to $1.43 billion. The bookings figure is four percent above April 1999 and is 29 percent above the May 1998 level of $1.11 billion.

"Shipments of semiconductor equipment are slowly catching up to orders as the orders continue to advance," said Dick Greene, principal analyst at SEMI. "The indication of market strength is seen in the bookings for May, which were just 13 percent below the $1.6 billion peak of the last growth cycle in November 1997."

The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month moving average shipments for the North American semiconductor equipment industry. Shipments and bookings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.
