Sid, I am an EV owner and am enthusiastic about fuel cells for some applications. I agree with your scepticism on their use in vehicles. It is just too complicated for a short term roll out and battery developments are coming along too fast.

There was a fuel cell vehicle in this years Tour de Sol:

The fuel cell was from HPower and the entire back seat was filled with bottles of hydrogen. The vehicle did fine in the race but looked more like a rolling science experiment than the well integrated battery only vehicles. I would not like to have been on the road with them in a roll over. Yes the bottles might have been filament wound and puncture proof but the complicated manifold system on the tanks piping high pressure H2 (3000psi+) to the fuel cell looked scary as heck.

I tend to be a bit more enthusiastic than you on the applicability of Plug Power's domestic unit. With backing from GE and gas utilities, certainly this is going to go somewhere. How fast and how big the market will be are open questions. I would think that at a price point even well above what they are talking, the utilities will love it: offers a chance for utilities to downsize their big central generating stations, lighten up the expensive transmission system, provides the homeowner with emergency backup, etc. You've cited ONSI in previous posts. I know they are doing a good business with computer centers and the like that need ultra clean power (electrically, I'm speaking, not fuel source.)
