>>How hot is that 20 gig maxtor

Not especially hot. I don't go overboard on heat, myself.
I have about a half-inch gap between the drives and there's
plenty of room in the case. I have one case fan and the
power supply fan (and cpu fan); that's all. Noise bugs
me; I'd rather replace a disk occasionally than fill my
workspace with vacuum cleaners (that's what all these
messy backups are for <ggg>).

Occasionally
I pull a surprise inspection and the heat build-up seems
small to my back-of-the-hand test, but nothing scientific.

I can't tell any difference (by the hand test) between the
20GB 7200 and the 17GB 5400 drives.

It may well be that performance for your apps would be
quite similar between the two. I recall the PC Lab
tests on the Maxtor 17G 5400 vs the IBM 13 or 14 G 7200,
with the Maxtor checking out faster in all benchmarks.
There's a simliar relationship here. I think they have
the same number of platters. Dunno about the cylinders,
but the specs are on the Maxtor web page.

Hey, I'm into 7200 now, don't try to confuse me with
facts <gg>.
