Well, well, well. Looks like Intel is having their share of problems ramping up Coppermine on the .18 process. Lets see how this affects AMD. (Don't worry, I won't forget about Intel's continuining DELAYS !) Intel will have a 600MHz, semi-sweet PIII (100 MHz bus) that will come out on August 1 (according to Tom's now-out-dated roadmap). This means that the K7 won't be the King of MHz, unless they pull a 650MHz K7 out of their deck of cards. I don't think that would happen about one month after the darn thing is supposed to come out. Intel's next higher MHz chip is supposed to be the 650 and 667MHz Coppermine and that was supposed to come out on October 24. Since the 600MHz Coppermine won't come out until November, the earliest the those two chips will come out is November. But doesn't it take time to tweak or whatever it is called the process to get higher MHz? Since the 600MHz Coppermine was supposed to come out two months before those two chips, is it okay to assume they won't come out until after the same time period, unless they had pushed the date off for other reasons than ability to make them. That means the if AMD wants to keep up with Intel in MHz, they don't have to come out with a 650MHz K7 until November, assuming they can make it. When the K7 comes out later this month, we know there will be limited chipset support. But since Coppermine is DELAYED until November, the K7 shouldn't have any competition performance-wise (basing that on the percentages ) 'til then. That gives AMD a little extra time to get a higher MHz K7 while at the same time giving Via and Ali extra time to get their chipsets ready in time for Christmas. Anyone have other thoughts? I kind of rushed writing this because the Stars game is starting, err, started a few minutes ago. BTW, the article about the confirmed DELAY has been updated and the PIII's prices are dropping, not the PII's.
