Nice for the hobbyist. What about people who only buy shrink-wrap?

Just as the GPL allows any individual to go put the pieces together to make their linux system work, it also allows any company to do the same. In fact, that's how RedHat and Caldera got started, doing distributions which are just amalgamations of a bunch of GPL'd software that's available for free. They took the software, packaged it up with some installation software, and voila, RedHat 6.0.

So, if RedHat and/or Caldera wanted to fix whatever their incompatibilities were right now, each could easily release a patch tomorrow. If they weren't so rushed, the "fixes" could be put into the next release of their distribution.

Like I said, the GPL makes it so that there are no legal and no technical reasons for incompatibility. It doesn't discriminate between the home user or the mega-fortune-100 corporation. All are welcome.
