John, I have no idea! And have never even heard of the practice until I ran across this article while waiting for a teeth cleaning yesterday. It kept popping back in my head while driving around all day. How horrible! And to a FIVE year old!!! I can't imagine! It sickens me. Michael

If Michael was in Northern Egypt (most likely) it is very likely that these beauties were quite whole sexually. It's a pretty touchy subject among us Muslims. Educated people hate this practice. It shouldn't even be attributed to Muslims at all. At the time of Mohammed pbuh, this was wide spread among the tribes of Africa. Of course Muslim men are circumsized and so an African woman came to the profit and asked him if it was OK for her to do this to her daughter. His answer was not that Muslim girls should have their clitoris removed it was that if that tribe had this custom ok but just "nic" the girl. The answer clearly made it ok to cut but as in the practice of circumsizing men it must be done in a harmless manner. The answer also did not make it required for Muslims. There is no mention of it in the Quran and most of us believe Mohammed was giving the woman a way to make this tribal custom harmless. I don't know of any Muslim scholars who promote it. I would never allow this to be done to my daughters. It is usually the mothers who do this btw not the men.
