Dell's Gigabuys.com Is Bloomie's For Techies

By Rivka Tadjer

One thing you can say with assurance about Michael Dell: He prices to sell.
Gigabuys.com, Dell Computer's virtual superstore for computer-related
products, is no exception to that rule.

Everyone knows that when you own a computer you constantly need more
stuff. RAM chips, software, printer cartridges, Palm Pilots -- everything that
makes your electronic life function -- are all part of the maintenance and
upgrading that is the computer industry's answer to razor blades.
Gigabuys.com has pretty much anything any respectable computer addict
needs -- and they actually have it in stock, too.

In some ways, Gigabuys.com is like a traditional department store -- say, a
Bloomingdale's for computer products instead of housewares and clothes (and
without the snob appeal, of course). At Bloomingdale's you can spend
thousands of dollars on a designer gown, but you can also wait for white sales
to get a good deal on those Ralph Lauren towels or bed linen you want.

Gigabuys.com also has a huge selection, from printers to tote bags, at killer
everyday prices. But it also has ongoing sales specials -- called "hot picks" --
a perfect way to get the stuff you need but can wait to buy until the price is too
good to resist. If you're in the market for, say, a new monitor, you can scan
the hot picks for a week -- tops -- and you're likely to find what you want.

Last week, one of the hot picks was a Dell 17-inch monitor for $179, in
stock. A nice deal if you've been thinking about upgrading from that old
15-inch tube on your desk top. A Xerox 8ppm, 600 dpi DocuPrint printer
was also a hot pick at $299.95, with a three-year warranty. Another great
deal.

It almost goes without saying that if you own a Dell machine, Gigabuys.com is
the place to go for accessories.

One area where
this site falls
down a little is in
its "New &
Notable"
product section.
Today's litmus
test for who
carries the latest
and greatest is
whether the
store has in
stock the new
Palm VII
personal
organizer.
Gigabuys is still
touting the Palm
V as new. Of course, I'm focusing on accessories here. For big-ticket new
and notable items, like NEC Technologies' Multisync FP1350 22-inch Natural
Flat CRT monitor, you can go to Gigabuys.com. In fact, the $1,330.95 price
is quite competitive.

Dell' s search engine technology and easy site navigation, which it imported to
this superstore, really makes the shopping experience simple. Checkout and
shipping is just like at Dell's main store: reasonable and easy, as are delivery
costs.

We rate Gigabuys.com *** 1/2.
