Good luck and better profits,

June 16, 1999:

Murdoch: Broadband Cable Rules
Chicago -- News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch, while reiterating his media empire's positioning as a platform-neutral content company, proclaimed Wednesday that broadband cable would be the predominant technological platform for content in the 21st century.

Murdoch, whose company has ownership stakes in numerous broadcast and cable networks, spoke at the closing general session of the National Show here.

Despite his optimism about cable, he maintained, "We are platform- and technology-neutral." He predicted that direct-broadcast satellite would stake out just "a small corner" of the marketplace -- maybe 5 percent to 10 percent.

Another accommodating comment from Murdoch regarding digital must-carry also elicited a smattering of applause from the cable-centric audience.

"We don't believe in digital must-carry," he said. "We have to work that out with you folks. We hope our content is so good that you'll be willing to put us on your digital spectrum."
