LONDON (AFX) - British Sky Broadcasting Group PLC has signed up around 800,000 new customers for its digital pay TV service and may pass the 1 mln mark within six weeks, according to the Financial Times, which said board members were already privy to the information.

The numbers have been significantly boosted by BSkyB's decision to give away set - top decoders needed to receive the service. The group had originally planned to hit the 1 mln landmark by the end of Oct.

BSkyB launched the 140-channel digital satellite offer last Oct, and in May entered a battle with rival OnDigital, by announcing the box giveaway.
