Ike, as always I enjoy your commentary even when it moves to world politics. What the "Idea" thread represents to me is the sharing of
thought via the internet. It is hard for people like yourself, and I feel myself, to think that in this world of incredible technology with the ability to share cultures, perspectives and experiences, that the baseness of war, and the disregard to human life, can be so rampant. After watching night after night, on ABC Nightline, seeing the events of Kosovo, as if it were a sporting event, I think many of us become idealistic in our safe computer world, and become disconnected from reality. The bigger question is that are we fooling ourselves thinking that as time goes by the masses will become more educated, enriched and enlightened, and that occurances whether in Kosovo or Somalia will become less prevalent or has the world
become a place of the "haves" and the "have nots" and technology only separates the educated and wealthy more from dealing with the chaos around us.

In the US I often think that the the middle class is disappearing and we are creating a society of "hamburger flippers" and the wealthy. Wealth built primarily
through the stock market. As we watch Kosovo, I do wonder how "stable" we are, as our society diverges.

With warm regards,

Kurt
