Doug, if you fear lack of monetary discipline, fine, but chose something that finding and extracting costs are more or less constant and make sure that its production growth rate matches no more no less the growth rate of the world economy. If you produce too little its price will go up and you'll have inflation, or if you keep its price constant, you choke the growth of the world's economy.

Maybe there is a smarter way to instill monetary discipline.

I agree doug..otherwise we will continue to see the musical chairs..
jumping from one currency to the next..one bond to the next..a hedge funds delight..
the hubris of the central bankers is totally mind blowing..
In this day and age..it seems so apparent that the focus has to be global..so many at least in the states just typlify the rotten side
of human nature.."only what is good for me"..
Bizarre how the news media won't say that why is IMF planning on
selling gold when so many of these countries they are trying to help
will have their economy further hurt if they depress prices of gold
--what parrots..
If there is some "judgment at the gates of heaven"..what will the Greenspan's of the world answer in response to the devastation of lives in so many emerging countries.."will survival of the fittest
pass?"
It just seems the superpowers have stepped on the backs of so many
people to export their inflation..
another joke..I remember years ago reading about the future and how
modern technology will free people to have a lot more leisure and the
big quandary was how would the people fill their leisure time..
Now..thanks to technology..more blood can be drained from the white collar worker..I can't believe how hard Americans are working..but I
guess the fear of the less recession is still deeply ingrained..
Once Asia recovers..wonder if USA will defend its dollar by saying it
is backed by something fixed..gold..
also wonder once Asia recovers..will there be a backlash against the
USA?
also wonder now about the former peace dividend..at this time..there are so very many dangerous spots in the world.. defense stocks will probably perform better than any stocks in the universe
also wonder about medical expenses..sounds like most hmos will go bankrupt..as government continues to save money...if these are the good times..what happens in bad times?
a lot of hard working people will probably have to declare bankruptcy..to gain medical treatment..
also a lot of people assume that people advocating gold are not necessarily investors in gold.. just people who don't see the emperor's new clothes and haven't bought into these are the best of times
