*****off topic on T******** Terrific rant on "T" Jim Willie, and some right smart paraphrasing of Gilder to boot. Funny stuff, yet with big dollar implications for the telecom part of the economy, and for my portfolio participation therein, about which I care very, very deeply. The poster whose screen name I will botch ('Ripple . .?) to me offers the most powerful counter argument. What you and George have laid down is that Ma Bell is toast in the new era for a variety of reasons all of which support the notion that T is missing the new techno wave big time. T is hidebound, bureaucratic, spending billions on last year's technology, confused (combining content and conduit), still don't quite "get it" that voice telephony is flat-lining on the old revenue meter, and so forth. As it happens, I find all of the above very credible. Ripple . . . however, says horse patootie. Don't give me all that New Paradigm Shift Crap--let's talk about The Church Of What's Happening Now Baby. And that means that T's got a pipe into more than 1/2 the US of A's homes as we post. And that means that hybrid fiber coax--rusted, funky, optimized for cable one-way, and crapped on by every squirrel in the neighborhood or not--will work NOW to give folks a big boost up the bandwidth ladder. Over time, T will be receiving $40/month from every Tom, Dick, and Harry in Cyberspace and will use that flood of dough to finance techno upgrades until one day they'll have T-1 line equivalents smack dab into Grandma's living room. It just kills me to bet against pragmatism. That said, I own Winstar cuz fixed broadband wireless has a play here, I think, please god. But that damned cable agrument may force me to buy TERN just to hedge my bets. Ramsey will never speak to me again if I do, but if it turns out to be a winner I'll have bragging rights till infinity. These are indeed confusing, difficult times! Best, Surfer Mike
