Unclewest,

Xilinx is one of the leading manufacturers of field programmable gate arrays. These devices contain general purpose logic that can be configured to do almost anything. Configuration data is downloaded from a separate non-volatile memory or microcomputer. They are widely used in small and medium production run products because there is no need to wait for custom ASICs to be manufactured (or to pay the non-recurring engineering costs). They are also widely used in networking and telecommunications applications, where the ability to modify the logic in the light of evolving standards is valuable. Xilinx recently announced support for internet updating of devices such as routers.

Virtex is the name of their latest product range which has support for many different variations of input/output standards - but not Rambus. If that support were available I believe many designers would use Rambus in devices such as PCI data acquisition cards and special purpose telecoms designs.

See www.xilinx.com for more info.

John

PS I am very impressed with both the quality and quantity of your research on Rambus, especially coming from a self-professed "non-technical" person.
