CJ: There's a fairly negative article about CPQ in IBD today. It's not available at their website and is way too long for me to retype, but here are some excerpts with a little editing ....

"There's confusion as to how op expenses could get so high," said Mark Specker of Soundview. "It's suggestive of a management team that doesn't have full operational control."

And yet, the chief aim of CPQ's reorganization plan isn't to boost efficiency, Specker says. It's to get the company growing again.

CPQ's employees, caught up in the company's bloated bureaucracy, haven't kept tight relationships with customers, analysts say. That's contributing to CPQ's stagnant sales.

and ....

CPQ's employees may be hesitant to embrace the new initiatives. After all, a new CEO may come in and change everything again.

"Any CEO who is any good is going to want to come in and make his own stamp on the organization," said Lou Mazzucchelli of Gerard Klauer Mattison. "That may or may not preserve the status quo."

and ...

What is certain is that CPQ's restructuring won't pay dividends for some time.

The company will be well-positioned by early 2000, Capellas (acting COO). Analysts see that as an optimistic prediction.
