Re: Bell Atlantic's New Central Office Agreement"In some instances the DSLs will pay for transit to a larger national provider's backbone, via MFNX, who in turn delivers to the national at the optical cross connect. Previously, this was done off site (away from the CO), primarily, but now it can be done inside the CO. The CO, in effect, becomes a fiber-based "meet me" point, just like those in colos, obviating many of the previous requirements which caused providers' to go "in and out" of the CO numerous times in order to interconnect with one another at an offsite location, such as a carrier hotel or a colo.BEL, in effect, has created neutral cross-connect zones within its own buildings. This will undoubtedly have a negative effect on some colo businesses whose primary intent is/was to provide such a "meet me" service. This is only the tip of the iceberg, when you stop to consider the other implications of this agreement at the logistics and internetworking levels. Most importantly, however, is that it will open up the photonic layer for inter-carrier and end user exploitation for the first time. " _____________ Frank, I know there are some important points above. You don't bold too often<G>. So I pulled them out for future reference. And have a couple of follow-up questions, if you don't mind. First, as I understand it Bell Atlantic, by agreeing to let MFNX into their CO, eliminates the need for ______________ to lease BEL's lines on the other side of the CO. I don't quite understand who those companies were/are? Are they Sprint, AT&T, MCI/Worldcom, Qwest, Level 3, etc., And/Or are they Covad, Northpoint, Rhythms, etc.? And/Or are they local phone companies(CLECs) I probably have not heard of? Secondly, since the Optical Cross-Connect can now be located in the CO, is this a big money saver for the DLECs and CLECs. If so, that means a lot more competition in the Bell Atlantic region, and more orders for Optical Cross-Connects, right? ..... Maybe a better way to word it is, No longer are the ___________ reliant upon Bell Atlantic's Optical Cross-Connects, right? And finally, I didn't even know there was such a thing as a, "colo business." From your explanation I see why they are going to be less useful as MFNX builds out in their territory. What companies provide this type of service? Got any names I might recognize? Not names particularly located in BEL's territory, but any names in general. The MFNX/BEL announcement has turned into a real educational press release for me. Thanks for all your comments. MikeM(From Florida)
