3G on the Horizon | Nokia Discovery Online, vol 47

Includes previews of some futuristic-looking designs for 3G terminals.

Two models are shown on the main page
nokia.com
and one with the article "Imagination, the Only Limitation..." on page 17.

It looks like Nokia will be going with a large direct-view display. In the concept phones the displays cover ~2/3 of the phone.

In yesterday's Wall Street Journal there is an article Motorola's New Research Efforts Look Far Afield (page B6) with a picture of "a prototype of a third-generation cell phone that could send video." Here is the description of the prototype display:

One of the most dramatic effects for consumers may be in display screens for cellular phones. In one lab, Motorola scientists have developed prototypes of next-generation screens—no thicker than a cardboard sheet and about two inches square—that can display color movies with higher image quality than most televisions. Within a year, they hope to have black-and-white versions of the high-resolution screens on some phones, and color screens later on.

They can talk all they want about resolution, that's still too small. Also, in contrast to the eye-catching designs of Nokia, Motorola's design looks like it just came from the lab.
