Thanks for the supplementals, perhaps I will look at the book you mentioned, but I am pretty convinced that the Truman Administration was justified. Remember, the Japanese were throwing kamikazes at us, and the casualty estimates for an invasion of the home islands, based upon the invasion of Okinawa, were horrendous, with the expectation of about half a million on the Japanese side alone. My impression is that Hitler became so intoxicated with early success that he began to over- ride his general staff on many important decisions: the opening of a second front, the declaration of war on the Americans, the conduct of the Siege of Stalingrad, and so on. Dictators start to believe in their own omniscience. Mao was worse, and would brook no disagreement on his dicta about agriculture and engineering. In fact, the disaster of the Great Leap Forward may have been for no other reason than to soothe his vanity...
