Ian, I read somewhere (but cannot remember where) that INTC and IBM are researching problems associated with alpha particles causing problems when features are reduced to sub .25 micron. My impression was that the involved problems are "soft errors", and still of "secondary" importance, but could it be that this might be a source of the problems?

By the way, it occurred to me that as features become smaller and smaller the importance of ionizing effects post production may become more and more important, and i wonder if the march to smaller features might not be halted by such stupid things like "cosmic radiation". Do you know if anyone has looked at these random phenomena and any impact it might have on the limits to micronization?
