Linux WILL stand out as one of the leading OS plateform for internet serving, but whether it will replace Windows NT as the NO.1 player remains to be seen. As for consumer level competition with Windows 95/98 is not a priority now for Linux designers, at least not before year2000 when its level of ease of use and application support(games, office apps) could reach that of current Windows, but it is chaning fast.

The latest version of RedHat 6.0 is pretty amazing, fully graphical KDE desktop, with WEB, email, ftp, and even Windows workgroup services are included right out of the box, NT is going to have a hard time competing with it.

<<Does anyone see Linux ever challenging MS Windows>>

Yes! Most definitely. As more and more of these
multiprocessor computers are sold (eg Pentium II and III)
an OS that can drive efficiently them will be a necessity.

Picture computers where you upgrade CPU's by plugging in
modules, like you do with RAM. Want to go twice as fast?
Plug in another CPU. Linux(Unix) has been able to handle
this for a long time.

<<It would seem to need a graphical interface much like Windows>>

Had one for years; it's called XFree86. It's also free and
comes boxed with RH Linux. I'm using it right now.

PM me if you want more technical hype :)
