>>but the removable storage market is just a subset of the larger market for storing bits. Because there is so many ways of storing and moving bits around IOM does not have pricing power.<<

This is exactly the point I've been trying to make here for some time. 37Gig hard drives, CD-R/W, DVD-RAM, 100MB Zip disks, Jaz, 10/100 ethernet, online storage, Orb, IBM Microdrive, CompactFlash, Flop!, and many others all compete in one way or another with each other.

Since you can now get a 37 Gig hard drive for about $400, Zip's role is vastly reduced from when it was first introduced. When Zip was first introduced, the average hard drive was about 500MB and Zip seemed like a great way to make way for more room on a congested hard drive. Now, this role is not needed. As for Zip's other role of archival, that is best served by CD-R/W.

*I have no doubt that Iomega will introduce branded CD-R drives and disks at PC Expo, but before Iomaniacs get all excited, ask what the MARGINS are!
