Competition??........Calico Trying To Make eSales More
Personal

Filed at 7:35 p.m. EDT

By Richard Karpinski for InternetWeek, CMPnet

Calico Software, which provides configuration
software to some leading e-commerce sites, this
week is debuting a more personalized version of
its eSales Suite.

Calico's new Loyalty Server enables collecting
and using user-profile data to facilitate complex
Web sales. The vendor is also beefing up the
performance of its existing modules, and
improving integration via a new software
development kit and prepackaged application integrators, initially for
Oracle's Order Entry software.

The new features "ensure that customers buy 'first and often' by making it
a personalized buying experience," said Matt DiMaria, Calico vice
president of marketing.

The Loyalty Server gives marketers and Webmasters tools to tag content
for personalized delivery and provides customized content and
configuration per user profiles.

The Loyalty Server's profiling capabilities can be leveraged across the
eSales Suite's existing modules as well, includingInfoGuide, which
provides in-context marketing and product configuration data;
Con-figurator, which handles the product configuration; and Quote, a
Java application that delivers quotes for the selected configurations.

Those modules support XML to prepare, for instance, for
industry-standard product vocabularies that will fuel the delivery of
complex products via the Web, said DiMaria.

Analysts said configurators such as those from Calico, as well as Trilogy,
FirePond, and Selectica, are becoming more mainstream.

Forrester Research analyst Harley Manning said eSales' enhancements
make the platform more accessible to a broader array of sites. "That's
important because configurators are about as complex a tool as you'll
find on an e-commerce site," he said.

In any case, the companies, which offer strategic Internet consulting and interactive media services, are part of a big and
growing market. According to Forrester research, the market for Internet and electronic commerce services worldwide is
expected to grow to $32.7 billion in 2002 from from $5.4 billion in 1998.
